Zoe should be Dog of the Year because I never had a dog before,
never wanted a dog and could never understand why other people preferred
their dogs to human companionship. Zoe has changed every preconceived
notion I ever had about dogs.
My husband died last February and within one week, my daughter
decided I needed a dog. Even though I resisted, she brought Zoe
and Zoe won me over the first night. I was laying in bed crying
for my deceased husband, and Zoe, lying in the crate next to my
bed, was crying for her brothers and sisters. I leaned over the
bed and said, "If we are both crying, we might as well do it together."
With that, I lifted her into my arms, where she proceeded to find
my face, lick my tears, curl up and fall asleep, all in what seemed
to be one seamless motion. I sat in the same position for 45 minutes,
waiting until she woke up. It has been a love affair ever since.
We walk together each morning, we play ball and every night she
climbs into my bed to curl up next to me. It would make me very
happy to see Zoe crowned "Dog of the Year" but if she doesn't win,
she has definitely won my heart!
